What is the trend in interior decorating style?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I am wondering what style is currently popular in furniture and interior decorating styles? I see a lot of furniture from ‘estate sales’, danish modern (Eames??), retro, etc. How do you find out what styles and trends are currently ‘in’?

Most popular decor is Early Yard Sale.

Danish oil all over my hands?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

After reading many answers here on how to treat solid teak outdoor furniture, I opted for Danish oil (my furniture came up beautifully). My hands, however (there was no warning to wear gloves, before anyone even starts!) – my hands have a varnish coating. I tried fairy liquid, and also white spirit and white spirit/washing powder. Any ideas?
I damned well said to my husband tonight to get me nail polish remover from Tesco but he insisted that white spirit would do the job. I will be moisturising for months!!!!
Thank you quality r
Adrian C. My husband was quite prepared to let teak what teak does well! Weather. I, on the other hand think that it is best to treat it. I got some nail polish remover today and it has shifted a little from my hands but it’s still a mess.
Izzy 12, I asked my husband if he had swarfega in the garage but he said it wouldn’t work! Consequently I am going to my accountancy job tomorrow with stained hands and nails! I have scrubbed and it definitely seems to be coming off but it’s painful and my hands were not in the best condition to start with. Hell mend me!

Acetone will usually remove stain products and most finishing products. It is somewhat hard on your hands. Use lots of lotion afterwards. It will dry them out severly. Don’t use around an open flame. Careful
Good luck

I would like to put a hanging chair in my room but…?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

My house is very old and the cieling won’t hold the weight of someone sitting in the chair. Is there any way I can make a frame or something that will help support the weight.
The chair I’m getting is similar to this.

Even is your house is old, you can still install this chair so it works and doesn’t rip the ceiling down on your head. I’ve done this sooooooo many times (mostly for very heavy chandeliers) and it works!

You will however, need to prepare first. You’ll need to go up into the space above the ceiling of your room and the roof. You can drill thru the ceiling and use a very long screw post (you’ll find it at any good home hardware store… just tell them what you want to do) It’s a long pole with threads just like a screw but flat on both ends. You can bolt this into a support post in the attic crawl space, then it will come out thru the ceiling in your room. Add a hook for 250 pounds to the thread post and hang your chair… it’ll hold 250 pounds, easily!

Nice chair, by the way!

How does one identify the type of wood a piece of furniture is made out of?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I have an interest in vintage (Eames era, Danish, Mid-century) furniture. Are there any "tricks" of the trade to help me recognize the type of wood (Walnut, Teak, Elm…)?

yes first you need to look at bare wood of each type. touch it smell it scratch it see how much it weighs . then look on the underside of the furniture the unfinished side and compare. it takes time to learn this but its not that hard
